I suppose it's already been mentioned, but I've been... distracted. I just had flashbacks to Devil's Trap, and it made me think

maybe Dean puts himself in the position to get pulverized by Sam/Lucifer (assuming Lucifer is on board at that point, since I don't think Sam would do that otherwise,) because it took him almost being murderized in Devil's Trap for John to break through. Remember how every time Azazel would start in on Sam, Dean would say something smart and draw him back, and then when it looked like Dean couldnt take anymore, that's when John got through. So, maybe Dean's kind of sacrificing himself so Sam can take control.

That's not to say Lucifer doesn't have plenty of reason to just pulverize him.

And I'm still not sure what good that would do them. If he did help Sam get control, that would only get Lucifer in the cage. Wouldn't explain how Sam gets out.

And I'm not sure I like the whole passive aggressive sacrifice aka yellow crayon moment.

It's just a thought.

Ohh, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that! I was thinking the same thing regarding Dean being the one who has been able to pull people out of possession state, his Dad, Bobby, ok it didn't work for Sam last time when Meg had him, but they've been through a lot more now so maybe...

Yeah I have no clue how that will help get Sam out of the cage, but it definitely could help him get Lucifer in there. Surely Dean will have something up his sleeve then...maybe!

Ok a bit random and not totally related to your post, but it made me think of it again.

Have you notice how Dean's looks is almost back to how it was in S1. The longer hair, Dad's jacket...don't know if it's significant but, I know Kripke like to give crazy little hints like those, so yeah, maybe Devil's Trap thought are on the right track.

Damn it, well just have to wait and see. I'm so bloody impatient! :D

Haha, well, it was actually a post someone else made, in which she said that Kripke almost always tells us what's going to happen, that made me remember Dean getting beat to a pulp in Devil's Trap.

I really wouldn't be surprised if that's what's going on there, but I'm not really happy about it, just because I'd like for Dean to realize he's good for something other than always throwing himself in front of the train, ya know?

Yeah, I can't remember what triggered if for me...I think it might have been from re-watching Bobby break through, teamed with the boys interaction in the promo.

But yeah, I know what you mean. As much as I love Dean broken, it breaks my heart too that his self-esteem is that low that he thinks that's all he's good for...canon fodder. As much as I know that he just wouldn't be the same Dean if his self-esteem improved, I do long for his character to re-build beyond the bloody broken man behind a mask of bravado that he is now. Doesn't make for as much angst and man-pain for awesome emotional scenes from Jensen though so I won't hold my breath. ;P
