Guys, late night television is murder on softies like me.

I just watched Blindsided on HBO.

You should go to the site and read the official synopsis, especially the second paragraph which starts out:

"Blindsided" is a story of what happens when a family is faced with the unforeseen, the unimaginable. It is a story of a father whose depression and blame rip apart his family...It is a story about Jared, who loses his eyesight in the prime of his life and finds the courage and strength to bring everyone out of the darkness.

I usually don't say, hey, someone write me disability fic, but this... It could be an awesome Supernatural Gen fic, or it could be amazing J2, with Jensen in the part of Ali the best friend...

Made me cry, dammit, and I'm supposed to be writing something naughty. *bangs head*

Hope you all had a great V-day. I've been trying to stay away, because fandom stuff is making me pull out my hair just lately. God, we need new episodes now.

*smooshes you all*

And I know this post is entirely pointless, but you should all at least go and hunt down this movie. I love true stories. *wipes tear*

ETA: Also, awhile back I mentioned that someone wanted to translate my fic, "Two Letters, Three Words" into... Chinese. I have some apprehension as to whether that fic CAN be translated because the whole plot of the fic is based on the fact that Dean calls Sam, Sammy, with the MY. And it really means, MY Sam. And I said if the original meaning of the fic could be preserved, it would be okay. I remember at the time that someone on my flist volunteered to read it over for me and tell me if it is true to the original. It's been over a year, though, and I've forgotten who it was. If there's anyone on my flist who speaks/reads Chinese and is familiar with that story, I'd be greatly indebted to you if you could give it a look see. She's just gotten the translation back to me. And I don't even have a language pack installed that lets me see it. LOL *begs* There might be a request in it for you, if you've got the patience of Job.

Oh, Gawd... I know it was probably good and all but the motif of inspirational disabled people... can be *so* cringe-worthy...

I... probably wouldn't be able to sit through that. LOL. *is a bitch*

Well, I can totally understand. The thing about this one was... the mother was the carrier for the gene that made the son go blind, and the dad was totally driven and tossing the blame, and... well, I mean take out wonky gene and insert demon blood... could so be Supernatural.

Also the best friend Ali is Muslim and the family Jewish, and that was also a very inspirational side story that could totally make it work as J2.

Plus, you know, the kid's name is Jared...

Heeee! No, I totally get what you're saying... that sounds awesome. *is totally curious now* Dammit. :D

I actually have a soft spot for disability in film. I once watched 20 films and did a paper on them for college. :D

Back before I imploded... *sigh*

I wonder if I could download this thing... *keeps eyes peeled on iheartcinema* *is still evil*

LOL, I dunno if you can or not. I just googled enough to find a decent synopsis. LOL. I'm kinda surprised I asked for this. I'm usually more for disabling Dean. LOL.

Hehehe... He hurts so pretty though! I mean, even *I'm* writing hurt!Dean right now....

As far as your comment though: dude, that totally made me think of deaf!Jared, and how he'd be different if he wasn't running his mouth all the time... *squints at self* I clearly have a running theme... And yet I feel like I'm encroaching and doing evil deeds if I even glance over a J2... *headdesks* Well, I did read some movie retellings, which I loved. Hee. But I am such a sucker for movies.

Speaking of deaf!Jared... You know, my BFF Tracer has a deaf!Jared verse over in her journal. She almost never updates, but her stories are pretty much standalones. [livejournal.com profile] 3rd_leg and I'm pretty sure she has a deaf!Jared tag, though I'm not sure she always remembers to use it. LOL.

J2 is not cheating. It's branching out.

Ooooooo... *is intrigued*

It's less that it feels like cheating and more that, especially with stuff like h/c my brain goes like, "but these are real people and you're talking about seriously traumatic shit happening to them, and I don't know how you mean that...

I mean especially because I've found some scary stuff, and it feels more ...real to me because they are real people, you know, and... yeah.

I mean, obviously, it stems from my own inability to separate fictional!J2 from real!J2, so t that's my own damage. But it still seems presumptuous and weird to me all the same. :/ Which isn't a judgment against people who *don't* feel that way, 'cause gods know I've got more J2ers than Sam/Dean shippers on my flist. But yeah.

Date: 2009-02-15 10:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tru-faith-lost.livejournal.com
No, I totally get that. I wouldn't read J2 at all for a good while after I discovered slash, cuz OH GOD, they're REAL! But I can only find so much inspiration in the frame of canon, and well, I read a few, and then a few more. I do admit that people who just write flat out torture fic actually scare me.

I get inspirations all the time, like how incredibly easy it would be for one of them to be hurt doing a fan convention but I worry about people reading that stuff and getting ideas... Y'know, not a problem with fans going out and plotting to attack Dean and Sam since they aren't real, but I certainly wouldn't want to put that idea into anyone's head when I have no idea what kind of heads are reading it.

Also, do you know anyone who reads Chinese? LOL. I totally ETAed this post.

Date: 2009-02-15 10:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] samidha.livejournal.com
LOL. Well there are a lot of dialects of Chinese... (The most common being Mandarin or Cantonese but even still they're completely different.)

I did take a ridiculously small amount of Chinese in high school through bizarre happenstance but all I remember how to do is count to about five and say thank you. *grin* In Mandarin.

Hopefully whoever it was will see this though!

Yeah--agreed... it's weird... I can't even really get into the AUs yet, because I'm like "but... they're... this is not them!" LOL. So I very warily read a few non-AUs and am very, very nervous doing so and very on guard for possible torture porn and stuff... And it overall just makes me a really jumpy person.

But I'm at the point now where I'm running low on SPN fics I like, especially since I'm meh about S4... so... I could see myself definitely branching out more as the SPN fics I like continue to dwindle. *crosses self reflexively* *twitches* Good thing I don't believe in Hell I guess. LOL.

LOL, well if there's a Hell, I'm sure there's more important stuff to punish than having vivid fantasies about real people and sharing them with friends.

You evol creature, you.

Do people still claim those? I think I used to belong to that comm and nobody every actually did anything but post bunnies that no one claimed, LOL. I'm still waiting for my AU where Sam is Criss Angel and Dean's the big brother that goes with him on all his stunts... dammit.

I haven't seen that movie but the story is heartbreaking. But then I rarely read handicapped fics. I just can't. It's too angsty for me. :(

Wow, I'm so happy that someone translated your fic into a different language. Too bad I don't speak Chinese, though, so I can't check it for you.

:D

It is a sad story, but also inspirational. I don't like anything without a happy ending myself. So, I can totally relate.

Haha, I don't know if I know anyone who speaks Chinese lol.

OMG! I'm sad now, just from reading that paragraph! And it's a true story? Yikes.

I have such a hard time with disability fic. (I think we've talked about this.) [livejournal.com profile] not_refined has a deaf Jensen 'verse (The Quiet 'Verse), an AU with very young Js, very much not explicit, just very quiet and sweetly told.

As for the Chinese, I don't blame you for being leery. I know you've seen those things where they make fun of bad translations, or even just try to read the instructions for assembling something made over there. Notoriously weird, much less for one where the English actually matters. *shrugs*

From: [identity profile] tru-faith-lost.livejournal.com
I love the deaf!Jensen verse, though I admit it not keeping up with every installment. Tracer has deaf!Jared verse. Splashpink also had a deaf!Jensen verse. You have mentioned that you don't like disability fic. It's not one of my hot buttons, either, but this was so inspirational and the story would fit them, ya know?

And yes, the Chinese thing kinda worries me, although she did send me the translation, and even though I can't see the Chinese because of I don't have the right language packs or whatever, it looks like all the names are still in English, so it might work. It's just that story is specifically ABOUT the letters which are English letters, so I worry.

*smishes*

Dude, I watched that too. I can't say that it made me cry though which is surprising.

I thought it was awesome that the dad called Shinedown and Jared (the young man that went blind) got to play with them twice. That totally rocked.

I second people checking out that documentary. It's very good.

Did you watch it last night? Or some other time. Cuz that would be so funny if we were watching at the same time just by accident.

I even watched Juno right before that. LOL. Saturday nights alone suck.

I hope you find someone to help out with translation. Sadly all I could help with might be French... and that movie does sound pretty weepy. Still - if you decide to do something with it - that would be awesome. *pokes you*

*hugs*

Haha, well if anyone offers to translate it into French, I know who to call. But I'm sure you can see the dilemma. I mean, how can a story about English letters and the way we arrange them to make pet names translate into a language with a whole other alphabet?

But like I said, she seems to have kept all the names in English, so maybe it's okay. *shrugs*

And I can't write that story. If I sit down and actually list all the fics I'm already writing I'll probably just delete my journal and join the Foreign Legion.

Actually, what's worse is there is no alphabet in Chinese...

LOL I can't read Chinese, but if you're really stuck, I can probably find someone to read it for me.. if it's Gen. LOL if it's slash, I don't think I'd be able to explain it to them...

Either way, if they kept the names in English, then the meaning may not totally be lost. But if they translated the names, I just can't think of a way that they could get the meaning across even if they phonetically translated 'Sam' like they do in the Cantonese dubbed version that is broadcasted overseas...
