Just because you may never get published doesn't mean what you write doesn't matter.
I think if your writing touches someone and it does damn it then it matters.
I also think what you live in and where doesn't make a shit hill of beans. I mean it's nice to have your own place, I didn't for a long time I rented and hell technically I still don't own I'm paying out the ass and I still have to fix shit when it breaks.
Job wise nowadays you're golden if you have one no matter if it pays good or not. So I think you're right there with a lot of folks with the prespective change in that area.
