Favorite tear-jerk moments...
Dec. 4th, 2008 05:10 pmThis is just a little poll of sorts, except there's no way to make a poll for it, so I'm just gonna ask straight out.
I'm plotting fic, as always, a Christmas-type fic. Eventually, it will be schmoop, but we all know the best way to get to the schmoop is through a ton of angsty goodness, right? The fic I'm thinking of will draw heavily from music and movies, and the best way to strike a chord is to draw on the familiar.
So, I'm wondering, what's your favorite angsty scene in a movie? It doesn't have to be a Christmas movie, though it gets double points if it's a Christmas scene from a movie. I'm not talking sad endings. NOOOOOO! I'm talking the moment in the story when you burst into tears and swore if Party A and Party B didn't get their happy ending you were going to write you Senator or boycott the studio.
Or, if you can't think of a movie, a song (include artist and the lyric that hits you hardest) that makes you tear up.
For me, the movie is coming up blank, though it might be the scene from Latter Days where Christian gives Aaron's watch to Aaron's mother. WAH! And the song is the Steven Curtis Chapman song, "All I Really Want for Christmas." The lyric that gets me:
All I really want for Christmas
Is someone who'll be here
To wish me happy birthday
For the next one hundred years
I don't care if they're not perfect
Even if they're a little broken
That's all right
So am I. *sniff*
So, in the name of angsty fic, what are y'all's faves? And, um, y'know, I'mma heading to work right now and love sneaking on to read comments, but don't know if I'll get a chance to reply right off.
You guys... *blushes*.. made of awesome.

Date: 2008-12-05 02:13 am (UTC)I get a catch in my throat when I hear Rascal Flatts "Moving On". That place in the song:
"...But I never dreamed home would end up where I don't belong."
That just kills me. I also get choked up by Andy Griggs song "If Heaven".
And if heaven was a tear it'd be my last one
And you'd be in my arms again
Also, how about the scene in Last of the Mohicans (1992 version) when Hawkeye tells Cora "I will find you, stay alive -- No matter what occurs, I will find you."
First time I saw that movie I thought I am going to be really pissed if they don't get back together.
My favorite Christmas movie is the Bishop's Wife (1947). Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven. Dudley is really wishing he weren't an angel since he has been sent to help the Bishop and now he is coveting the Bishop's Wife. There is a moment when it looks like Julia and Dudley will kiss and you know it is wrong and she would just be sorry and he would have a lot to answer for too but still you want them to but you don't want them to.

Date: 2008-12-05 03:42 am (UTC)Its the scene in Armageddon when AJ has drawn the short straw and Harry goes to the surface of the asteroid with him but takes AJ's place to blow up the nuke.
Don't mock me. Its a beautiful scene.

Date: 2008-12-05 04:02 am (UTC)Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman in Someone Like You when Jane is explaining to Eddie why she wants to believe her theory so much and tells him that if the theory is wrong, then there's just something wrong with her that makes men leave her.
The scene in Love Actually when Emma Thompson opens the present she thinks is the jewelery her husband got her and finds out that he got her a cd and the jewelery went elsewhere. She just breaks my heart when she goes back to their bedroom to deal.
Book Moment:
When Ennis pulls out the two shirts and you read the line where he swears to Jack even though he's never been the swearing kind. Man, did that ever tear my heart out.
Song Moments:
Again by Needtobreathe had me bawling the other day when I was in a certain mood because of the boy...
I don't want to stay, I don't want to fall/ I don't want to have to see you leave me/ I don't want to take, I don't want to lose it all/ Maybe I'm a fake, maybe you're a lie/ Maybe our last chance died with last night/ 'Cause I don't want to stay I don't want to fall in love with you again
And then there was the time that I was crying without even realizing it at the Dave Matthews Band concert because I finally got to hear my favorite song "The Stone" performed live. *face palm* I'm such a dork.
ANGSTY SPAMMMMMMMM &hearts
Date: 2008-12-05 06:52 am (UTC)The Promise: Tracy Chapman - It's just so emotive, I can't really do it justice... it's so desperate and.... ee.
If you wait for me then I'll come for you
Although I've traveled far
I always hold a place for you in my heart
If you think of me If you miss me once in awhile
Then I'll return to you
I'll return and fill that space in your heart
Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
I'll find my way back to you
If you'll be waiting
If you dream of me like I dream of you
In a place that's warm and dark
In a place where I can feel the beating of your heart
Behind The Wall: Tracy Chapman (which is lyrics only, no music, which makes it just...guh....)
Last night I heard the screaming
Loud voices behind the wall
Another sleepless night for me
It won't do no good to call
The police
Always come late
If they come at all
And when they arrive
They say they can't interfear
With domestic affairs
Between a man and his wife
And as they walk out the door
The tears well up in her eyes
Last night I heard the screaming
Then a silence that chilled my soul
Prayed that I was dreaming
When I saw the ambulance in the road
Tons of songs by Kris Delmhorst, a local indie artist...
Moscow Song (HOMG THIS IS STANFORD ERA SAM/DEAN SO MUCH, Sam-POV. )
Came to a land where the morning don't wait for the break of day
And the nighttime comes as a surprise
Picked myself up, took myself far far away
Far away from a big hearted man who looks into my eyes and says
Won't you take this love from me
Don't you leave it here filling up my hands
Won't you just take it along with you
Won't you let it just remind you where you stand
Don't you ever want to know just where you stand
Don't you really want to know
But I got something in me that keeps me on the go
It keeps me going going, keeps me gone
And I got something in me that keeps me on an unfamiliar street
Running up to strangers, tugging at their coat and saying
Won't you break this heart for me
Don't you leave it here smooth and shiny filling up my throat
Won't you just make a little crack for me
So maybe something could get in
Or something could get out
If something could get in maybe something could get out
I guess we're all the same, we walk our days looking for a little more fire
And we all sometimes have to sit on our hands
We try to hold ourselves together
We try to talk about the weather
When all we really want to do is take each other by the throat and say
Won't you dream my dream with me
You can hear that one (as a cover) at this link:
http://www.actionext.com/names_k/kris_delmhorst_lyrics/moscow_song.html
And Lullabye 101, especially live... This is such a Dean song.... (SamPOV):
Sleep you little soldier boy, with your ear against the wall
You have held that rifle all of your life, now it's time to let it fall
Sleep you little alibi, with your reasons in a row
You have turned in circles all of your life just so your shadow wouldn't show
Dream with me, dream with me, we'll wake in better days,
And we'll build a boat and we'll hope that it floats
And then we'll sail, we'll sail away
Seep you little resume, with your head above the crowd
You have held your breath in all of your life just to make somebody proud
Sleep you little reservoir, let your banks just overflow
No you can't contain all of that rain, you're gonna have to let it go
Dream with me, dream with me, we'll wake in better light,
And until we rise with open eyes, goodnight, my love, goodnight
Yes until some sun wakes everyone, goodnight, my love, goodnight
Streets of Philadelphia - from the movie Philadelphia. When my uncle died I played this and Behind The Wall back to back on repeat for weeks and weeks and weeks, months maybe, and just...was in a permanent state of tears the whole time. :P

Date: 2008-12-05 06:56 am (UTC)And last one: Weatherman:
I make a really bad umbrella just like I said I would
I'm full of holes and I do not stay put
So don't think I'm keeping you dry it just is not raining yet
When the clouds come to our sky we'll both be soaking wet
I make a really bad clothesline so don't pin your hopes on me
Do not try to tie me tree to tree (etcetera)
I make such a bad clothesline I would not pin nothing on me
Cause when you come back for it you might find it's gone in the breeze
And I don't know I don't know I don't know what else you expected me to say
Because I know you know I told you long ago that it would always be this way
...
You can go ahead and blame me
Like you blame the weatherman for the rain.
Movies:
Twelve Monkeys for like the entire last 20-30 minutes or so. *facepalm* God. I know how hopeless it is and yet every time I'm like: HOPE PLEASE?!
Moulin Rouge, sooooooooo many moments I can't even tell you. I can't always get through that movie. Um. It's got fucked up personal significance to me that I don't want to get into in this comment but I'll be happy to PM you.
Magnolia, when Earl is giving his monologue about his late wife and regret, he says that "having no regrets" is BS and you can use the regrets you have. (He's on his deathbed.)
Capote in a few moments. (Philip Seymour Hoffman is awkward angstful nerd character love, esp. when Capote is breaking down before the execution.)
Donnie Darko when he says "How's it feel to have a freak for a son," and his mom lies and says "it feels wonderful" because he needs to hear that, and she's all teary and it's the last time we're going to see her. Augh god.
There are always more.
Books:
The Last Herald-Mage Trilogy, book 1, just... guh. I. That has hurt me deep in my soul since I was such a wee girl... I could ramble for ages about it but basically character A and B are soul-bonded male lovers, and character B has lost his twin bro in a feud/war. He leeches off of character A's (SAM'S) magic powers through the bond to go wreak vengence and then when he realizes what he's done he leaps off a building. It.... it's like this John-Dean amalgemation. Um. :P God that sounds so... I don't know. That 'verse ruined me for all other fantasy, I swear. The writer isn't even good, she just... the drama and the angst and the heartstrings, gah!
And um. There are other books. Of course. Lots of them on cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy.... But honestly? I have to stop spamming you.

Date: 2008-12-05 08:15 am (UTC)The Armageddon moment mentioned above made be bawl like a baby, as did Dean holding a dying Sam in AHBL2 and Ennis crying at the end of BBM. I must be a cold hearted bitch because I can't think of any other moments on film that made me feel so devastated. The jewelry scene in 'Love Actually' broke my heart, oh and the scene in 'A Room with a View' (1985 version with Julian Sands) where Mr. Emerson tells Lucy that George has gone because he's heartbroken (after Lucy spends the whole film fighting her attraction to George because he and his Dad are oddball characters) Corny, but 'It's a Wonderful Life' always gets me, 'Scrooge' too (I must have seen a gazillion versions) and of course Sam playing Scrooge to poor, desperately-trying-to-hold-on Dean ripped my heart out, btw;)
Books? The ones I loved all have character death, so forget it!
Songs? Too many to mention, but Leave by REM, Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones and The Unforgettable Fire by U2 leave a funny feeling in my chest;) The song 'I'll be home for Christmas' shatters my heart because I haven't had Christmas with my parents, siblings in the 18, count them, 18 whole years since I moved to Europe and it never works out for us all to be able to get together at x-mas time:(
