Spam invitations?
Jun. 28th, 2009 01:15 pmThis is quick, as I'm at work, but this pissed me off.
I came back from lunch and found that I'd received an invitation to a community.
bitchery. I'd only been at lunch half an hour and had just checked my email before I left, so the invite was less than half an hour old.
It didn't sound like my kind of comm, but just like the last time I received a weird invite, I scoured the list for my friends, and found two, so I considered joining. (Incidentally the same two or three friends that were on the last invite to the last community
thesovereignty, I think.)
Anyway, so I went to accept the invitation, and it was gone. There's a huge post in the comm that says, "Oops, if you got an invite, but it's gone, that's because we invited too many people and had to delete some."
Huh. So, the only reason I'd ever have joined in the first place was because a)I was invited and b)I had a couple friends in it.
Now, I find the invite is just spam? Well, that takes all the novelty out of it. I replied in their little thread under the post about disappearing invites, and there were two or three comments about, "Oooh, my invite disappeared but this sounds awesome, can I still join?" And I posted that I wasn't sure that sat well with me that an invite that was less than an hour old was already deleted to make room for more. I got a reply from the person who invited me. I did not know her. She said she was sorry, but there are four mods, and they all invited too many people. She hoped I would still join.
I went back to work and pondered, because really that didn't sit well with me, and I kinda made up my mind to reply and tell her, no thank you. I don't like the idea of spam invitations, but my comment was DELETED along with the other comments on the post. Either that or the entire post was deleted and they posted another one. I don't know. I'm guessing someone else called them on the "Way to make people feel welcome by admitting to them that they're only spam to you," and they deleted all the comments.
Gotta say, I won't be joining that comm ever, and I'm thinking about leaving the other one I just joined, since it seems they're using the same spam list to invite from.
Just... grrrrr.
I was having a nice, zen day, too. I should've learned my lesson about accepting invitations to communities I never heard of. Last time, I ended up in a Jensen bashing comm that made me cry. LOL. I'm such a big baby. How do I get myself into these messes?
