A-HA! See, I was saying before I even posted this that I was gonna get flack for Jared being an ass. You wouldn't believe how much rewriting this went through to make him as sympathetic as he is. I added the entire first part to add an element of desperation and angstiness, this feeling of treading water and just needing the waves to break somewhere. If they didn't start out all screwed up, then there'd be no need for plot, LOL. PLot is about character development, right? So yeah, he started out as someone who needed developing and hopefully changed for the better.
