Fandom or Fan Dumb, where you do you belong?


Many thanks to starry_ice for pointing me to this gem. I can totally think of an example, in some cases, several examples of, people who fit these descriptions. I won't tell you which I think I am, since I think I'm kind of a monster mash of a few (which I will arbitrarily say makes it okay, cuz the bad parts and the good parts cancel out and actually make me sane, but then that makes me a whole other level of dumb, Bwahahahahaha!)

Hmm, I try to be objective about myself, and I don't see myself as any of those, so I guess that's good, but I do take issue with this: Good fandom occurs from having a diverse community who respect and tolerate differences of opinion. For the most part, they actually are.

Since when is any kind of community, online or otherwise, ever defined as good only on the basis of respect and tolerance. Sure, those are conducive qualities for building the platform for the exchange of ideas, but I don't think it makes a fandom bad when people don't choose to respect one another or wish to express differing opinions. I don't think it makes the world bad, either. Expression takes all forms, as does communication (a fact we know), and I'd argue the writer confuses their point by using a value judgment in relationship to an emotional response.

LOL. Way more thinky than I care to engage in. I think it's just a 'for fun' kind of thing. To be honest, I didn't even read all of it, just the descriptions of the different kind of fans, since I've often thought about compiling such a list myself and never thought it'd be well received, so declined to do so.

First- is there ANY perfect fandom out there? Obviously not when you have a fandom makeup of all these categories that the writer listed. But then- thats fandom? Right?

I couldnt really peg myself in any one category- prolly because on any given day I might be one or another of them. I dont think I'll ever qualify as a hardliner. And maybe I am naive' to think-"hey its a fictional show - can we all come back to reality and take a breath" Cool thing to share though- kinda made me think a bit.

I think so, too, about it making me think. I've often considered compiling a list of all the different fan types as I see them, but I figured I'd just be bringing wank down on myself. I don't think this person or persons is far off the mark though. Probably a way more comprehensive list than I would've done. But then, I'm lazy, and I don't get paid for this. LOL.

Hahaha well I have seen every one of those in the SPN fandom!!
I liked when they said, "Although they tend to be louder than the rest of the fanbase combined, they are usually a decided minority in almost every fandom."

I am kinda a combo of a couple of those, The Willfully Blind mainly. Although I know SPN has faults, I prefer to focus on the awesome.
And during some wanks I have thought to myself, well if everyone would just think like me no one would be arguing!

You're welcome. I often feel the same way. I mean, we're all going to have things we don't especially care for, but when we let them eat away at the experience and choose to post about them and invite other people to bring their negativity... well, seems counterproductive, ya know?
